Canmore Hospital Foundation: Emergency Department Renovation Update

We’re coming to you with an exciting update from the Canmore Hospital Foundation! We are bursting with excitement to share the latest updates on our ambitious $4.4 million dollar Emergency Department (ED) Renovation Project at Canmore General Hospital. This journey began with an identified need to transform the department into a modern, highly functional, and state-of-the-art facility. Thanks to overwhelming community support and generous contributions from Alberta Health Services, major donors, and local families and businesses, we are very close to making this vision a reality.

A Community Effort

Early in 2023, with invaluable support from Lorne and Joyce Heuckroth, the Cooper, McCubbin, Broadfoot, Kerwin, and Carter-Ryan families, plus countless community members, the Foundation achieved its fundraising goal and the project launched with a swing of the hammer. The funds raised, combined with incredible backing from all corners of Canmore, ensured a transformation that will enhance patient care, improve privacy, and streamline emergency services.

Progress So Far

The project kicked off in 2022-23 with the completion of all design and architectural renderings. Phase 1 commenced in June 2023 with the construction and renovation of the new waiting room, washroom #1, triage and registration area, medication room, and gynecology room.

During phase 1, local artists Jason Carter and Bridget Ryan confirmed a transformational gift of artwork for the ED project. Specifically designed for the space, Carter Ryan Gallery contributed 17 works of original art that not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the department but also provide a sense of calm and inspiration to all who enter.

Now, we are thrilled to announce that  Phase 2 is complete. This phase included a new  Doctors' Office, Rapid Recliner area, soiled utility room, and washroom #2. Each step forward brings us closer to the finish and a cutting-edge emergency department that will revolutionize the care provided in our community.

Looking Ahead

We are currently in the final phase of the renovation, with the new nurses' station already completed. The remaining elements of Phase 3 include the trauma area,, treatment rooms, and clean storage. We anticipate the entire project will be completed by Fall 2024, and we cannot wait to unveil the finished product to our community.

This project is not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about enhancing the experience for patients, families, and healthcare workers. The new emergency department will provide increased privacy, better patient flow, and improved infection control standards. It’s designed to serve everyone in the community more efficiently and effectively, ensuring that our local emergency services are top-notch.

A Vision Realized

It’s hard to believe we are so close to completing this ambitious project, one that we have been dreaming of for years. The impact of this renovation is already being felt, and we are eager to see the full transformation come to life. This life-saving, life-changing project is a true community effort, and we are honoured to be bringing it to fruition with the support and guidance of Canmore General Hospital staff, Alberta Health Services, and our incredible donors.

Thank you for being part of this journey with us. Together, we are making a lasting difference in the lives of our community members and visitors. Stay tuned for more updates as we approach the grand unveiling of our newly renovated emergency department!
