Fundraising Kicks Off To Enhance Endoscopy Equipment at Canmore General Hospital

In the heart of the Bow Valley, where mountains meet a close-knit community, Canmore General Hospital stands as a strong foundation of health and well-being. For decades, this hospital has served as a lifeline, offering essential care to residents and visitors alike. As Canmore grows and evolves, so does the demand for advanced medical services. The Canmore Hospital Foundation has been integral to meeting these needs, working tirelessly to ensure that our hospital not only keeps pace but leads in delivering cutting-edge care. Today, we face a new challenge—a challenge that brings with it the opportunity to transform healthcare in our community once again.

The Canmore General Hospital needs to upgrade its endoscopy equipment—a critical investment that will significantly enhance the quality of care our surgeons can provide. Endoscopy is more than just a medical procedure; it’s a window into the human body that allows doctors to diagnose and treat various conditions with remarkable precision. By inserting a thin, flexible tube equipped with a camera into the body, physicians can closely examine internal organs, detect abnormalities, and even perform surgeries. This technology is essential for identifying conditions such as gastrointestinal diseases, ulcers, and cancers that could otherwise go unnoticed until they become severe. The clarity and precision provided by the latest endoscopy technology are directly linked to the early detection and effective treatment of such life-threatening diseases.

The current equipment, purchased in 2017, has served us well, but medical technology has advanced leaps and bounds since then. The time has come to bring the latest innovations to our hospital, ensuring that our community continues to receive the highest standard of care possible.

“The hospital has seen substantial growth in the past few decades and with it, improvements, and expansions to the services it provides. The Canmore Hospital Foundation has been an integral part of this,” said Barb Shellian, Director of Bow Valley Community and Rural Health. The introduction of new endoscopy equipment is not just about keeping up with advancements; it’s about setting a new standard for care in our region.

The Impact of Endoscopy at Canmore General Hospital

At Canmore General Hospital, our in-house general surgeons perform between 1,300 and 1,400 scopes each year. This staggering number highlights the critical role that endoscopy plays in our community’s healthcare. On any given day, these surgeons see 12 to 15 patients, conducting life-saving procedures that hinge on the quality and reliability of their equipment. The impact of this new equipment on our community cannot be overstated. With these advanced tools, Canmore General Hospital will not only maintain but elevate its standard of care. The ability to perform over 2,000 scopes each year—an increase from our current capacity—means more patients can be seen, diagnosed, and treated right here at home. This expansion in capacity also allows for more days per week dedicated to endoscopy, reducing wait times and ensuring that critical conditions are addressed as quickly as possible.

However, as our hospital continues to evolve, so must our tools. Dr. Matt Muirhead has already made significant strides in expanding the range of procedures we can safely perform in Canmore. “There are two main differences with the new equipment,” he notes. “First is the optics. The optics are a generation newer, with correspondingly better pictures. Second is the handling characteristics, particularly the variable stiffness. This makes the scope safer, reducing the risk of perforation and allowing for more complete procedures. This saves the patient from needing extra procedures and adds comfort with decreased cramping, which means less sedation is needed.”

The Power of New Technology

The latest endoscopy equipment is not just an upgrade; it’s a leap forward in our ability to provide exceptional care. “The scopes we have now are older, and there is much better technology available today,” explains Amanda Kerik, Head Nurse of Surgical Services. “The screens and picture quality are far superior, and the new scopes offer variable stiffness, which reduces risk during procedures.”

The enhanced optics of the new scopes mean that our surgeons will have an even clearer view inside the body, directly improving their ability to diagnose conditions accurately and early. This is especially important in the detection of cancers and other life-threatening diseases, where visibility is directly linked to diagnosability. The ability to detect these conditions in their earliest stages can be the difference between life and death. Additionally, the new scopes’ advanced handling capabilities make procedures safer and more comfortable for patients, minimizing risks and improving overall outcomes.

As Dr. Muirhead, who has already performed several “firsts” in terms of procedures at our hospital, notes, “There are certain things we can’t or shouldn’t do in the Valley. But there are some things that can be done safely and close to home. Since I’ve been here, I’ve done a handful of procedures that have led to people being able to have surgery locally for the first time. I’m really passionate about helping us grow as a hospital, expanding and modernizing what we can offer locally.”

This sentiment encapsulates the spirit of Canmore General Hospital—a commitment to growing and evolving with the needs of our community. But as Dr. Muirhead wisely points out, we can only grow to the extent that our tools allow. With this new endoscopy equipment, we have the opportunity to expand our capabilities, improve patient care, and continue to provide the high-quality medical services that our community relies on.

A Call to Action: Our Community’s Role in Shaping the Future

The Canmore Hospital Foundation has always worked closely with hospital staff to identify and fulfill areas of need, whether that means investing in new technology or replacing outdated equipment. In this case, it’s both. The new endoscopy equipment represents a critical enhancement that will allow us to offer safer, more effective, and more comfortable procedures to a greater number of patients. However, this is a significant investment, with the cost of the new equipment estimated at $440,000.

We are now turning to our community for support. Just as we have come together in the past to ensure that Canmore General Hospital has the resources it needs to serve our community, we are asking for your help once again. Every contribution, no matter the size, will bring us closer to our goal of providing our surgeons with the best tools available. Together, we can ensure that Canmore General Hospital continues to be a place where advanced medical care is delivered with compassion and excellence.

Supporting the Future of Healthcare in the Bow Valley

The Canmore Hospital Foundation is a registered charity separate from the Canmore General Hospital. Funds raised by the Foundation do not replace base funding from Alberta Health Services but enhance the patient care provided by the hospital through equipment purchases, programs, staff education, and facility improvements. Over the years, thanks to the generosity of our community, we have raised over $8 million, ensuring that our hospital remains at the forefront of medical care in the Bow Valley.

Your gift today will directly impact the lives of those in our community by ensuring that our hospital staff have the tools they need to continue delivering exceptional care. Together, we can make a difference. Together, we can ensure that Canmore General Hospital remains a strong foundation of health and hope for generations to come.
